SAN ANTONIO

Conocida por su tradición y su ubicación ideal que ofrece una linda vista de la ciudad. Su panorámica más cercana permite ver la arquitectura del Cali Viejo. Caminando por sus calles se encuentran pequeñas boutiques de artesanías, cuenteros folclóricos y restaurantes de talla internacional y de comida típica de la región como aborrajados, marranitas, chuleta valluna y champús. Vale la pena una visita a la Capilla de San Antonio, construida al estilo barroco del siglo XVIII.

San Antonio también es el barrio donde se elaboran las tradicionales ‘macetas,’ las cuales son obsequiadas por los padrinos a sus ahijados cada 29 de junio. Se trata de un trozo de balso en el cual se incrustan dulces y objetos pequeños y que se adornan con festones o hélices de cartón generalmente llamadas ringletes. El Valle del Cauca es el único lugar del país donde se celebra esta fiesta, la cual data desde finales del siglo XIX.

San Antonio is known as a traditional neighborhood and for its ideal location, which allows for lovely views of the city. Its lookout provides glimpses of Old Cali architecture. Strolling down its streets you will encounter small arts and crafts boutiques, folk storytellers, and both world class and local food restaurants, in which you will find traditional dishes such as aborrajados (sweet plantain with melted cheese), marranitas (fried green plantains stuffed with pork rinds), chuleta valluna (schnitzel) and champús (a sweet drink made with corn, fruits such as lulo, and seasoned with cinnamon, cloves and orange tree leaves). The San Antonio Chapel, built in XVIII century baroque style, is worth a visit.

San Antonio is also the neighborhood where the traditional ‘macetas’ are crafted. The ‘macetas’ are gifted by godparents to their godchildren every 29th of June. The maceta is a balso stick on which sweets and small objects are pinned. It is decorated with festoons and pinwheels. The Cauca Valley is the only place in Colombia where this holiday, which dates back to the late XIX Century, is celebrated .
